Pest control in a Dubai restaurant is a legal requirement, not an optional hygiene extra. Dubai Municipality checks that every food business works with an approved contractor, keeps valid treatment records and has that contractor linked to its premises in the FoodWatch system.
In practice, many inspection problems start with paperwork rather than pests. A spotless kitchen can still fail if a certificate is missing or the contractor is not registered online.
What are the Dubai Municipality pest control rules for restaurants?
Dubai Municipality requires every food establishment to run an active pest control program through a licensed provider and to prove it with records. Four rules apply.
1. Approved contractors
Restaurants must hire a pest control company approved by Dubai Municipality. A general trade license is not enough. The company needs a DM pest control license, certified technicians and municipality approved products. Before signing, ask for the company's DM license number and confirm it covers commercial food premises, not only homes.
2. Treatment certificates
Every service visit should end with a certificate that shows the contractor's official DM license number, the date, the areas treated and the products used. Inspectors review these records during scheduled and unannounced visits. A missing or incomplete certificate can count as a compliance failure even when the kitchen itself is clean.
3. FoodWatch registration
Dubai Municipality requires food businesses to set up a digital contract with their pest management company through the Supplier Management system on FoodWatch. This means your provider must be registered to your business address on the platform, not just named on a paper agreement. Your outlet's Person in Charge (PIC) adds the supplier in the portal and uses it to report pest incidents.
4. No DIY
Treatments carried out by kitchen staff, even with shop bought sprays, do not count toward legal compliance. They produce no valid certificate, may use products not approved for food areas and often push cockroaches deeper into equipment. The risks of DIY pest control are higher in a commercial kitchen, where customers are affected too.
What are the most common pests in Dubai restaurants?
Three pests cause most restaurant problems in Dubai: cockroaches, flies and rodents. Each is drawn to a different part of the operation, so each needs its own control plan.
1. Cockroaches
German cockroaches are the most common restaurant pest. They hide near warm, moist kitchen equipment and plumbing. According to the University of California IPM program, each German cockroach egg case holds about 30 young and a female can produce a new one every few weeks. That is why a few sightings can become an infestation within a month. Gel baits and crack and crevice treatment work better than sprays near food surfaces, and targeted cockroach control reaches the voids where nests sit. Dry floor drains are another common entry route, and cockroaches in drains often return after surface treatment if the drain itself is not cleaned and sealed.
2. Flies
Open or dirty trash bins attract flies quickly, along with spilled food and drains with organic buildup. Flies carry contamination from waste straight to prep areas. Keep bin lids closed, empty and wash bins daily, clean floor drains on a schedule and fit air curtains or screens on doors that stay open during deliveries.
3. Rodents
Rats and mice seek out food sources and entry points in storage zones, loading areas and waste rooms. They gnaw through packaging and cables and leave droppings that contaminate stock. Seal gaps around pipes and doors, keep stock raised off the floor and use professional rodent control with tamper resistant bait stations placed away from food.
