If you have never had an air conditioner installed before, the process can seem more complicated than it actually is. For a typical split AC, the work involves much more than putting a unit on the wall and switching it on. The position of both units, pipe routing, drainage, electrical connections and final testing can all affect how reliably the system performs.
Knowing what happens during AC installation also makes it easier to prepare your home and recognize whether important steps have been completed properly. This is particularly useful in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where an AC may be working for long periods during much of the year.
What happens before the AC installation starts?
A proper installation begins with an assessment rather than drilling immediately. The technician needs to understand where the indoor unit can be positioned, where the outdoor unit can be safely placed and how the two will be connected.
The assessment normally considers the room layout, available wall space, pipe distance, condensate drainage, electrical supply and access to the outdoor unit. If an old system is being replaced, the existing installation is also checked to determine what can be reused and what needs to change.
This stage is important because a convenient location is not always the right technical location. The units need adequate clearance, secure mounting and suitable routes for refrigerant pipes, wiring and drainage.

What are the main steps during AC installation?
For a standard wall-mounted split AC, the installation generally follows a sequence similar to this:
1. Marking the installation positions - The technician marks the indoor unit, outdoor unit and wall penetration points. The pipe and drain route should be considered before drilling begins.
2. Mounting the indoor unit bracket - The mounting plate is securely fixed to the wall and levelled. Correct positioning helps the indoor unit remain stable and supports proper condensate drainage.
3. Creating the wall opening - A suitable opening is made for the refrigerant pipes, drain line and electrical connections. The route should be planned to avoid unnecessary bends and interference with other building services.
4. Positioning the indoor unit - The indoor AC is secured to its mounting bracket and connected to the pipework, drain and electrical components.
5. Installing the outdoor unit - The outdoor unit is secured on an appropriate bracket, stand or base. It needs adequate ventilation and should be mounted securely to limit unwanted movement and vibration.
6. Connecting the refrigerant pipes - Copper refrigerant lines are connected between the indoor and outdoor units and properly insulated. Poorly made connections or damaged insulation can contribute to later cooling or condensation problems.
7. Connecting the drain line and electrical supply - The condensate drain needs a suitable route so water can flow away correctly. Electrical connections should match the requirements of the installed equipment and property.
8. Evacuating and checking the refrigerant circuit - A vacuum pump is used to remove air and moisture from the refrigerant circuit before the system is put into normal operation. Manufacturer installation instructions specifically include evacuation and checking for leaks as part of the installation process. AC repair can become necessary later if installation faults are allowed to develop unnoticed.
9. Running and commissioning the system - The technician powers up the AC, checks its operation and verifies important functions such as cooling, drainage and unusual noise or vibration.
