5 Signs You Need Pest Control This Summer in Dubai

From June to September, outdoor temperatures in Dubai regularly pass 40°C, and pests move into air-conditioned homes where water, food, and shelter are easy to find. Heat also speeds up breeding. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, warmer temperatures shorten German cockroach development time and increase the potential for population growth, with nymphs reaching adulthood in 50 to 60 days at average indoor temperatures. A few pests in June can become an established infestation by August. These are the five signs our trained specialists look for first during a summer inspection.

1. Unusual smells

A musty, oily, or sour smell that you cannot trace to food or drains is often the first sign of hidden pests. Droppings, body secretions, and nesting material release odors that build up in enclosed spaces long before you see the pests themselves.

• Kitchens: a strong oily or musty odor behind the fridge, under the sink, or inside cabinets usually points to cockroaches.

• Pantries and storerooms: an ammonia-like smell of urine suggests rodents.

• Bedrooms: a sweet, musty smell near mattress seams, especially with itchy bites, can point to bed bugs.

Once a cockroach smell is noticeable, the population is usually too large for sprays to reach, and targeted cockroach control is needed to treat the areas where they hide. For bedroom odors paired with bites, professional bed bug treatment is far more reliable than washing sheets alone.

2. Droppings or trails

Droppings, smear marks, and trails are physical proof of an active infestation. They also tell a specialist which pest is present and which routes it uses.

• Cockroach droppings: tiny black specks, similar to ground pepper, in drawer corners, on shelves, and near appliance motors.

• Rodent droppings: dark, rice-sized pellets from mice or larger capsule-shaped pellets from rats, usually near food packaging and skirting boards.

• Grease marks: dark smudges along walls and baseboards where rodents and cockroaches travel the same path repeatedly.

• Ant trails: lines of ants moving between food or water and a gap in the wall, following scent trails laid by scout ants.

• Shed wings: small, identical wings on windowsills or near light fixtures, often left behind by swarming termites.

In summer, a single ant trail usually means a colony is nesting close by, often inside a wall void or under tiles. Wiping the trail removes the scent for a day or two, but ant control that targets the colony is what stops workers from coming back.

3. Noises at night

Scratching, scurrying, rustling, or gnawing sounds from ceilings, walls, or false ceilings after dark usually mean rodents are nesting inside the structure. Rats and mice are most active at night, and in villas and ground-floor apartments they often travel through AC ducts, drainage points, and gaps around pipework to escape the heat outside.

The noise is likely rodents if:

• It is loudest between late night and early morning

• It comes from the same spot repeatedly, often above a kitchen or storeroom

• You also find droppings or gnaw marks in the rooms below

Rodent populations grow quickly once they nest indoors, so booking rodent control at the first sound is far easier than removing an established colony later in the season.

4. Damage to furniture or wires

Chewed cables, gnawed furniture edges, holes in food packaging, and hollow-sounding wood mean pests are actively damaging your property. The type of damage points to the pest responsible.

• Rodent damage: rodents' front teeth grow continuously, so they gnaw on wires, plastic, and wood to keep them worn down. Chewed wiring creates a real electrical and fire hazard.

• Termite damage: wood that sounds hollow when tapped, blistered paint, sagging skirting, and pencil-thin mud tubes along walls or foundations.

Termites are especially costly because they feed silently from the inside out. By the time damage shows on door frames or cabinets, the colony has usually been active for months. Early termite treatment protects the structure before repairs become expensive.

5. Pests keep returning

If you spray, clean, and still see pests again within days or weeks, the source has not been treated. Store-bought sprays kill the pests you can see, but they rarely reach nests inside walls, drains, or under appliances. Some repellent sprays even scatter cockroaches into new rooms instead of eliminating them.

Recurring pests usually mean one of three things:

1. An established nest or colony hidden inside the structure

2. An open entry point, such as gaps around pipes, drains, or door frames

3. A moisture source, like a leaking pipe or AC drain line, that keeps attracting pests

Repeating DIY treatment is one of the most common pest control mistakes, because it delays proper treatment while the population keeps growing.
