Which installation mistakes cause these AC problems?
Several installation details influence how well an air conditioner performs. A mistake in one part of the installation can create symptoms somewhere else in the system, which is why repeatedly repairing the visible symptom may not solve the underlying problem.
1. Incorrect unit sizing: an AC that is too small may struggle to meet the cooling demand, while an oversized system may cycle too frequently instead of operating for appropriate periods. Equipment should be selected according to the cooling requirements of the space rather than using a simple rule of thumb. 2. Poor airflow: restricted, poorly connected, or inadequately designed ductwork can limit the amount of conditioned air reaching rooms. This can leave certain areas warmer than others and make the system work harder.
3. Incorrect refrigerant charge: the system needs the appropriate refrigerant charge for its design and operating conditions. An incorrect charge can affect cooling performance and energy efficiency and may increase the risk of system failure.
4. Poor condensate drainage: the drain line needs to be connected and routed correctly so condensation can leave the indoor unit. Problems with the drainage arrangement can result in water appearing around the AC.
5. Incorrect positioning or mounting: indoor and outdoor units need secure support and suitable positioning. Poor installation can contribute to vibration, noise, restricted airflow, or difficult access for future maintenance.

How can you tell if your AC was installed incorrectly?

Pay particular attention if one or more of these issues appear soon after installation:
- the AC does not cool the room effectively from the beginning

The strongest clue is often the timing. If the problem was present from the first day or appeared shortly after installation, the installation itself should be considered alongside other possible causes.
For example, if an AC has always struggled to cool a particular room, checking the equipment size, airflow and duct arrangement may be more useful than immediately replacing a component. If water leakage began immediately after installation, the drainage arrangement should also be checked rather than assuming that the unit simply needs routine cleaning.
It is also useful to compare the problem with normal AC performance. A system that gradually becomes less effective after months of use may have a maintenance or component issue. A system that has never performed correctly may warrant closer attention to its original installation.
